National Carers Week 11–17th October: Recognising the Hidden Workforce Behind Disability and Aged Care

Behind every person living with complex health needs, disability or age-related challenges, there is often someone quietly providing extraordinary care.

Family carers are the unsung heroes of our healthcare system.

Throughout my nursing career, I have had the privilege of working alongside countless carers whose dedication, resilience and compassion continue to inspire me. Many provide support twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, often placing the needs of others ahead of their own.

Yet carers frequently experience physical exhaustion, emotional strain, social isolation and financial pressures. Their contributions are immeasurable, but too often they go unrecognised.

National Carers Week reminds us that supporting carers is not optional—it is essential.

When carers are supported, individuals living with disability and complex health conditions receive better outcomes, families remain stronger and communities become more resilient.

As healthcare professionals, we must continue to advocate for respite, education, resources and access to services that promote carer wellbeing.

Carers are not simply part of the healthcare team.

They are the heart of it.

To every carer who gives so much of themselves to support others, thank you.
