Supporting Families Living with Complex Care Needs: A Nurse’s Perspective

One of the greatest privileges of my work is walking alongside families caring for children with complex health needs.

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to support many incredible mothers, and I continue to be humbled by their strength, resilience and unwavering dedication to their children.

What has struck me most is how much of what these families do is often viewed simply as “parental responsibility.”

But behind those words lies a reality that many people never truly see.

These parents are not only mothers and fathers.

They are advocates.

They are nurses.

They are therapists.

They are care coordinators.

They are medication administrators.

They are emergency responders.

They are teachers.

And they do all of this while trying to navigate everyday family life.

They attend appointments, manage complex care routines, advocate for funding, coordinate therapies, provide overnight care, and constantly adapt to the changing needs of their children.

And they do it out of love.

What many people do not realise is that there are countless challenges happening behind closed doors physical exhaustion, emotional strain, uncertainty about the future and the ongoing task of navigating systems in order to access the support their children need.

As a nurse, these experiences have given me a deeper appreciation of the extraordinary role families play in the lives of children with complex care needs.

Healthcare works best when we recognise families as partners in care rather than simply expecting them to carry the weight alone.

Families do not need judgement.

They need support.

They need education.

They need respite.

They need reassurance.

And perhaps most importantly, they need to know that they are not alone.

To every parent and caregiver supporting a child with complex needs, please know this:

I see you.

I see the sacrifices you make.

I see the endless appointments, the sleepless nights and the quiet moments of worry.

I see the advocacy, the courage and the love that drives you forward.

And I hope you know that what you do each day is extraordinary.

Because behind every child with complex needs is a family doing their absolute best—and that deserves to be recognised, valued and supported.
