After 27 years in nursing, one lesson has remained constant:
People may forget what we do, but they will never forget how we make them feel.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary healthcare professionals and witnessing the incredible impact that compassion, kindness and mentorship can have not only on the people we support, but also on those entering the profession.
As I reflect on the future of healthcare, I often think about the next generation.
- The nurses.
- The allied health professionals.
- The support workers.
- The clinicians.
- The leaders.
And those who have chosen to dedicate their lives to serving others. Because healthcare is not an easy profession.
- It requires resilience.
- It requires sacrifice.
- And above all, it requires compassion.
Unfortunately, we are increasingly seeing talented people leave healthcare altogether because they have had poor experiences within the workplace. Some have encountered environments where they felt unsupported, undervalued or unheard.
That concerns me. Because leadership is not about titles. It is not about being a Director. It is not about being a Managing Director. And it is certainly not about power. Leadership is about service. It is about lifting others up. It is about mentoring those who are just beginning their journey. It is about creating environments where people feel safe to learn, ask questions and grow.
It is about leading by example. And it is about recognising that the way we treat one another ultimately influences the care we provide to the people who place their trust in us. Compassion and clinical excellence are not mutually exclusive.
In fact, I believe they are inseparable. The most effective leaders are those who lead with empathy, humility and integrity.
- Those who are willing to teach.
- Those who are willing to listen.
- Those who remember what it felt like to be new.
And those who understand that investing in people is one of the greatest investments we can make. Because when we support healthcare professionals, we strengthen teams. When we strengthen teams, we improve cultures. And when we improve cultures, we achieve better outcomes for everyone.
After 27 years in nursing, I have come to believe that our greatest legacy will not be our titles or positions.
- It will be the people we encouraged.
- The confidence we helped build.
- The lives we touched.
- And the example we set for those who follow after us.
- Because leadership is not about being above others.
- It is about walking alongside them.
And perhaps the greatest privilege of all is helping others become the healthcare professionals they were called to be.
